EMPIRE BRIGADE IN KOREA
BRITISH MINISTER’S TRIBUTE
(Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, February 20. The Minister of Defence (Mr E. Shin well), in a statement in the House of Commons on operations in Korea said to-day that the British Commonwealth 27th Brigade played a big part in restoring the situation in the Wonju area during recent fighting there by relieving the mixed French and American force which had been cut off at Chipyong. Most valuable help had been given by contingents of New Zealand, Australia, Canada, South Africa, Belgium, France, Greece, toe Netherlands, the Philippines, Siam, and Turkey, he said. Mr Shinwell said British casualties to date were 1430 killed or died of wounds, 422 wounded, 244 missing, and 61 prisoners of war. American casualties totalled 48,035, including 8154 killed.
