TROTTING VEDETTE AND PARAWA DERBY WIN

Championships Continued At Addington

THREE RECORDS BROKEN IN TROTTING SECTION

Vedette and* Parawa Derby returned to their best form when they won their heats of the third qualifying race at the Inter-Dominion Championship meeting at Addington yesterday. Both horses were odds-on favourites and they won wiJh great ease. It is expected that they will dispute favouritism in the final on Saturday. Vedette showed more dash than on the earlier days at the meeting. There was an upset in the second pacing heat, which Aqua Lady won. There was not much pace on early, and Aqua Lady had a perfect run through in the straight. Aqua Lady should continue to pay her way. x The trotting heats both provided great spectacles and there were spirited finishes in both. Swanee River finished in fine style to catch Dictation right on the post in the first heat; and Gay Belwin had an easy win in the second heat.

Conditions at Addington were perfect for racing. There was no wind and the sky was overcast. A number of fast times were recorded, and three records were broken in the trotting section. The final half mile in Parawa Derby’s heat was run in 59 3-ssec and the final quarter in 29 3-ssec.

Parawa Derby made amends for his defeat on the first d y of the meeting by winning the first pacing heat easily. He is expected to be one of the favourites for the final. He looks at the peak of his form. The Dillon Hall gelding rtands up to hard racing in fine style.

Blue Mist was made a strong favourite for the second pacing heat, but she did not appreciate the muddling pace in the middle stages and was only a fair third behind Aqua Lady and Dundee Sandy. The latter ran his best race for almost a year, and finished in fine style. Constellation, winner of the Adelaide Handicap, the first leg of the double, carried 1526 tickets in a pool of 21,623 tickets. Ten were not redeemed in the second leg, the Brisbane Handicap, and 226 were placed on Mighty Song. The winning combination returned £79 Is 6d for £l. There was a good attendance for a mid-week day, and totalisator investments amounted to £124,992, including £lO,Bll 10s on the double. The total investments for the three days are £435.551. Impressive Win Parawa Derby made a sound effort m winning the first pacing heat. He was never far from the leaders and at the straight entrance "he was following Young Charles and Real Scott, with On Approval, Captain Sandy, and Plunder Bar close up. Parawa Derby was given his head at the furlong, and he coasted home to win with ease from Captain Sandy. Parawa Derby had not raced with much luck on the earlier days of the meeting. He is in excellent condition for the final on Saturday. Captain Sandy ran a grand race from 36 yards. He was never far away, and he ran on in fine style for second. His 4min 13 4-ssec is the fastest time for the distance recoded at Addington this season. Young Charles did not run on as well as expected, after having every chance, and he was four lengths back, with two lengths to Real Scott, which had made most of the pace. Plunder Bar shaded County Antrim and Trusty Scott for fifth, with another two 'engths to Fortuna. On Approval was nulled up in the straight with a broken hopple. Young Charles. Real Scott, Plunder Bar, and Parawa Derby were slow at the start. While Trusty Scott broke:- ” AgM Lady Surprises J ■ Aqua Lady continued the rout of the favourites at the meeting, when she won the second pacing heat. The Water Ranger mare was patiently handled bv her owner-trainer, P. G. O’Reilly, and she came on sol'dly in the straight. The veteran pacer. Dundee Sandy, gave a glimpse of his best form When he finished second, a neck away. He was handy most of the way and finished better than anything else when he got clear. Blue Mist was not suited by the slow oace set in the middle stages, and she was beaten into third place. She should race prominently in the £lO,OOO final on Saturday.

Worthy Gold made all the pace, and at the straight entrance he was shading Blue Mist, Chamfer, Aqua Ladv. Doctor Ted. Dundee Sandy, and Black Diamond. Worthy Gold held on for fourth, just ahead of Chamfer, which did not have a good run in the straight. Doctor Ted and Victory Globe, which did not run on, were next.

Red Emperor broke badly at the start, and was well out of the race all the way. Victory Globe, Aqua Lady, and Black Diamond were slow away.

Vedette Back to Best Vedette showed that he is back to his best form when he easily accounted for the field in the third pacing heat. M. holmes drove a waiting race, and at the straight entrance he was at the rear behind Maori Home, Claude Derby. Single Direct, Burns Night. Lady Averill, and Trustee. Vedette was brought wide out, and he won in smart time from Maori Home, which had made all the pace. It was Maori Home's best effort for some time. Dragoman ran his usual honest race for third a neck away, with three lengths back to Single Direct, which gained fastest time He pulled very hard in the middle stages, or he might have reached a place. Burns Night was a fair fifth, followed by Lady Averill and Trustee, with Claude Derby last. Claude Derby ran a fine race to the straight, where he was under pressure. He covered much extra ground. Burns Night, Claude Derby, and Dragoman broke at the start, but they settled down quickly. Results:—
