CROQUET
DOMINION TOURNEY
FINAL REACHED IN MEN’S EVENT
A large gallery watched A. Ross (Oamaru) play A. Heenan (Wellington), in a semi-final of the men’s championship at the New Zealand croquet tournament yesterday. Both men played outstandingly. Ross had his clips on penultimate and rover before Heenan started, but once Heenan collected the balls he held command, and won by three points. The second game was almost a replica, except that Ross was not so far advanced when Heenan got in. When H. O. Hicks (England) met Mrs W. Martin (Opawa) in the open championship he moved his clips once only. He made four complete rounds, going from the first hoop to the peg each turn. Although contacts were taken, Mrs Martin had little success against the English champion. Mrs W. Kirk (Geraldine) was Hicks’s next opponent. The match lasted little more than an hour. Again Hicks made three complete-rounds. Mrs Kirk had an opportunity to score, but failed to do so, and Hicks won the rubber by the maximum points. A very tricky peg out was made by J. Solomon (England) in the handicap singles against Mrs J. Pepper (Upper Hutt). His ball went between the uprights of rover hoop, and he pegged out from there.
Mrs D O’Neill (Gore) made good use of her bisques against A. Heenan. She is a far stronger player than her handicap indicates. Results:—
