VICE-REGAL VISIT TO SCHOOL
FUNCTION AT ST. ANDREW’S COLLEGE
“One of His Majesty’s instructions to me on coming out to New Zealand was to see as much as I could of the rising generation." said the GovernorGeneral (Sir Bernard Freyberg), explaining the object of his visit to St. Andrew’s College, Christchurch, yesterday morning. Sir Bernard and Lady Freyberg were greeted on arrival by the school’s pipe band. The GovernorGeneral was attended by Lieutenant A. G. Tait. R.N., A.D.C. ■The Governor-General said he liked to find out all he could about a school when he visited it. He praised the high ideals of St. Andrew's College and urged all pupils and old boys to carry them with them when they left school. He commended the guard of honour a..d made special reference to the smartness and general bearing of the band. Hundreds of pupils, parents and friends were assembled in the open air for the function. The vice-regal party w s welcomed by the rector <Mr L. W. Stewart) and by the chairman of the board of governors <the Rev. Stuart Francis). Mr Stewart said that in its 33 years, the college roll had grown from 17 to 418. The college had produced two Rhodes Scholars and its representatives had upheld the school's reputation on the playing fields, on the battlefields and in many peace-time activties. The vige-regal party was conducted round the college grounds and buildings.
