RACING FINAL DAY OF N.Z. CUP MEETING

Churchill Stakes Will Be

An Attraction

BALLOCHMYLE EXPECTED TO WIN

The Churchill Stakes, a mile race at weight-for-age, will be one of the outstanding attractions on the final day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s New Zealand Cup meeting at Riccarton to-morrow. The field of 10 appears to be dominated by Ballochmyle, whose winning performances under big weights have ranked him as one of the best milers of all time m New Zealand, but other champions and near champions in Beaumaris, Pierre, Voltaic, Lord Moss, and The Unicorn will give the race exceptional interest.

Ballochmyle will be making his first appearance this season on his home track. Last start he carried 9-13 to a brilliant victory against a highclass field of milers in the Wainui Handicap at the Wellington spring meeting.

Zenith will be at short odds in the New Zealand Oaks Stakes, in which she will be opposed by four others. The Takanini-owned and trained Foxbridge filly showed marked superiority to the other fillies in the Desert Gold Stakes at Trentham. That win followed her fourth in the Auckland Guineas. She contested the New Zealand Derby Stakes at Riccarton last Saturday, finishing brilliantly from well back for fourth after being checked and galloped on. The. Hawera-trained Naturally may offer Zenith* strongest opposition.

Betting will be well spread on the Metropolitan Handicap, for which there will be a capacity field. If New Zealand Cup form is reliable, Earldale and St. Bruno should race well, but others whose chances must be rated highly are Signify, Renowned, Super Snipe. Biassed, and Trench Fftiy. Trench Fray, which has been lightly raced so far this season, advanced in favour for this race with a smart gallop at Riccarton yesterday. The Metropolitan Handicap forms the day s double, with the Members' Handicap, in which The Hob appears to have good prospects of completing a double for the meeting and scoring his third successive win. The too weight with 812, The Hob galloped attractively at Riccarton yesterhe has a favourable barrier position. No. 8, to help him. Te Kooti made a promising start in open company by finishingly brilliantly for second in the Stewards’ Handicap, and the extra furlong of this race to-morrow may be to the advantage of this Defaulter gelding, which will be one of the outstanding light-weight prospects. Ptolemy, third in the Stewards’ Handicap, will also be well supported, as he impressed in his final gallop at Riccarton yesterday. His main handicap appears to be his barrier position, No. 19. That may also apply to Ned Kelly, winner of the Jockey Club Handicap on Monday. Ned Kelly, which has been racing cqnsistently for Mr J. M Samson, will be bracketed with Robinfaye and Trident, whose fo r m has not been so good. Paper Strip, which finished fourth in the Stewards’ Handicap. Resolute. Hutton, and Bosun are others which may add interest to the finish.

Finance Again Favoured Finance has good prospects of his third • tbe ,neetin B in the Middleton High-Weight Handicap. He will / carry 11-3, or 241 b more than he did when he won the Suburban High-Weight on the first day and 131 b more than in the Port Cooper High-Weight, which he easily won on ‘Monday. Each day Finance has finished strongly and won decisively. He will meet Pageant—the runner-up In the Port Cooper High-Weight—on 81b worse terms to-morrow, but that mav not enable the Oamaru-trained Battle Song gelding to beat him.

Beau Soir followed Finance home on the first day when the distance was one mile and a quarter, but he failed to fill a place on the second day over two furlongs further. To-morrow’s race is run over one mile and a quarter and this consistent Nightly gelding has prospects of filling a place. Bren Gun lost several lengths at barrier-rise on Monday and made up a lot of ground for sixth. In the same race Home Circle filled fourth place, finishing solidly after being second to last on the home turn. If this race is chosen for her in preference to the Otaio Plate she may make a )old showing. Bosky won the Spring Nursery Handicap in clear-cut style on the first day -nd his prospects of adding the Pioneer Handicap to his record look bright. It is doubtful whether Scorned, with 10-1, can concede a galloper of Bosky’s ability 201 b, although the Trentham filly was untroubled to win the Irwell Handicap under 9-5 on Monday. Under handicap conditions Sinister, which ran fourth in the Welcome Stakes, should also run Prominently under 8-0. Poetical, Milano, -nd Montana appeal most of the others. Smart Hack Pheroz Girl has promising form credetentials for the Seymour Handicap. This Hastings trained three-year-old will oe making her first appearance at the neeting but she ran good races at Trentham last month, filling fourth place in the Desert Gold Stakes and the same osition in the Tararua Hack Handicap. The Lum had to show a lot of ability to win the Apprentices’ Handicap on Monday as she was badly drawn at the jarrier. Her win. however, was most onvincing and the manner in which she wes running on at the finish indijated that she will be untroubled by a mile. Entrancing has her second in the Hagley Handicap and fourth in the Ashley Handicap to recommend hey chances, and she will probablv be more at ease over the shorter distance of this race. Count de Gama, Jock Scott, and Stagdance. three Riccarton-trained hacks, mav fare best of the others. Gay Gitana, which finished solidly for third in the Ashley Handicap on the second day, may improve on her recent minor placinrs by winning the Otaio Plate. She finished a length behind the winner, Spice, in the Ashley Handicap and in this race she meets that mare on 91b better terms. Over the extra two furlongs the difference in the weights will give Gay Gitana a marked advantage. Granddaughter has shown useful form in hack stayers’ races. ,and others with fair credentials arc Re'ormed. All Hurry, Eastern Monarch, and Home Circle. Finance and Home Circle are also engaged in the high-weight. Selections are: ' Middleton High-Weight Handicap: Finance, Home Circle, Pageant. New Zealand Oaks: Zenith, Naturally, Pioneer Handicap: Bosky, Sinister. Scorned. Metropolitan Handicap: St. Bruno, Trench Fray, Signify. Churchill Stakes: Ballpchmyle, Pierre, Beaumaris.
