CRICKET

COUNTRY WEEK AT HAGLEY OVAL Two teams had easy outright wins in the country cricket week matches which were continued at Hagley Oval yesterday. South Canterbury beat Ashburton by an innings and 82 runs, and Suburban beat Ellesmere by nine wickets. The other match, between Malvern and North Canterbury, was the most interesting of the three. North Canterbury made a determined effort to catch Malvern’s first innings score of 259. Beardsley and Moody started the innings well, taking the 'score to 65. Beardsley was very slow but there was something of the essence of opening batsmanship in his dogged display. His was the third wicket to fall, with the score at 112. The fifth wicket fell at 120, and then Cunningham and Avery set about the bowling, which was beginning to tire, and added 112 runs for the sixth wicket. Cunningham has been making runs and taking wickets for several years in these country week matches, and his innings of 85 yesterday was an excellent one. With four wickets in hand, 28 runs were needed, but the tail failed and the side was out for 249. T. Richards bowled with great stamina, and although he was often slightly short of a length with his medium paced outswingers. he deserved his five wickets. A. F. Wright, a slow left-hander, came on fairly late in the innings. He bowled steadily and broke the Cunningham-Avery partnership—the turning point in the game. The Ashburton batting was disappointingly •weak, considering that two possible Canterbury representatives this season (M. B. Poore and P. Z. Harris) were playing for the team. Poore batted attractively in the first innings, but Harris failed /in both. The best performance in this match was that of M. Purcell, a leg-spin bowler, who took four wickets in the first innings and seven in the second. It Is unfortunate that he will not be playing against one of the Canterbury teams to-day. J, Pine also bowled well. N. S. Davidson was caught and bowled by Riordan without adding to his overnight score of 68 when Suburban continued its first Innings against Ellesmere. Suburban made 226 (E. Hitching five for 59). and Ellesmere found the deficit of 88 too much for them. The second innings produced 129 runs. G. Brooks and M. Frampton both batted brightly, but Mitchell’s medium-paced bowling was too much for the tail-enders. As a result of the games yesterday between Malvern and North Canterbury and Ellesmere and Suburban, Malvern will play Suburban to decide the winner of the SubAssociation Shield. This match will probably be played in January:— Scores : SOUTH CANTERBURY v. ASHBURTON SOUTH CANTERBURY First innings, for nine wickets declared .. .. .. .. 328 ASHBURTON First Innings D.
