HOUSING

Si r < —So the City Council favours assistance in securing land and builuing materials for immigrants (who have not yet emigrated). Very interesting. It is a dinerent story when it comes to dealing with New Zealanders who have struggled for years to obtain building supplies. They ate told by the City engineer that there has never been a snortage of materials tor home building. They are threatened under the socialistic 1945 act with the demolition even of their temporary shacks, and (vide Mr G. Dell) expulsion to the Harewood transit camp. They are advised, under threat, to proceed more swiftly in future with the construction of their homes. If the City Council wishes to avoid the charge of deliberately manufacturing excuses for destroying property not belonging to it, let it say clearly what assistance in obtaining materials it proposes to give to these people.—Yours etc., STILL STRUGGLING. October 25, 1950.

1 The City Council has no desire to comment on this letter other than tq B ®7,, tbat no !uc h statement as that attnouted by the correspondent to the City Engineer was ever made,” said an officer of the Christchurch City Council.]
