EDUCATION IN N.Z.

MORE CONTROL WANTED FOR BOARDS A motion suggesting that the MinOf Education (Mr R. M. Algie) should state his policy on giving education boards and school’ committees more control in education matters, was carried at a meeting of the Canterbury School Committees’ Association, and will be sent as a repiit for consideration at the Dominion School Committees’ Federation conference in Auckland next March. In suggesting the remit Mr S. J. Irwin said the Minister had once said he was considering vesting more control in education boards and school committees. He considered now was the time to press for further powers for these bodies, i The president (Mr R. J. Cooper) said that one of Mr Algie’s first statements as Minister of Education was that he was considering this step. “I think we can say we now have a little less control than before,” said Mr Irwin. The Minister to-day insisted on the purchasing of land for schools being done by land purchasing officer's of the Ministry of Works rather than by the boards, as had been done in the past. The proposal raised at last month’s meeting of the association to revert to annual school committee elections, was not supported at the meeting. At last months meeting it was decided to refer the matter back to the individual committees. The proposal was unanimously defeated.
