WATER FOR NEW BRIGHTON

PERMANENT LINK

The water pipe-line for New Brighton from the Kerr’s road pumping station has been completed as far as Page’s road and the temporary reticulation link of four inches diameter hap been replaced by 700 feet of 10inch pipe, the water committee reported last evening to the City Council. By the change, the New Brighton reticulation would be more satisfactorily connected to the city reticulation. "The main pumping station staff has converted a Bren gun carrier into a tractor crane for pipelaying purposes." said the committee. "While primarily designed for the Huntsbury pipeline, this is being tried out on the Kerr’s road job and, subject to certain minor alterations, has proved a most valuable piece of equipment. For pipelaying purposes a crane should be side-mounted, and this presents difficulties. However, at a cost of under £5OO, a piece of equipment has been obtained which, as far as the waterworks department is concerned, will do the job as well as one costing £3000.”
