HOME SWEPT DOWN HILL

EARTH UNDERMINED BY HEAVY RAIN (New Zealand Press Association) . AUCKLAND, November 7. Deluging rain undermined earth which swept the home of a young married couple, Mr and Mrs J. McMurtrie, nearly 20 feet down a slope at Titirangi yesterday. Mr McMurtrie had spent his week-ends for 18 months building the house, which he finished four weeks ago. Mrs McMurtrie was caring for her nine-months-old son about 5 o’clock in the afternoon. The rain had stopped, but as she looked out the back door she saw a tree in the garden moving slowly down the hill. She ran with the baby to a neighbouring house. Slowly, the hillside moved behind the house, and slid down the slope, first the outhouse, then the house. Mr McMurtrie arrived home 15 minutes later to find his house perched crazily on the hillside with the front windows pointing downwards at an angle of about 60 degrees. Tons of earth have since piled up at the back door.
