GUIDED MISSILE PRODUCTION

Work Begun By U.S. Navy

(Rec. 9 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Nov. 2. The United States Navy is beginning limited production ot the first guided missile, according to an announcement elade to-day. It is the first official nnouncement that guided missiles had moved out of the purely experimental stage into actual production. Trie Navy- also stated that it is converting a shin said to be a 13,700-ton cruiser to carry and fire the missile as a “primary" anti-aircraft weapon. The missile has already been fired from a submarine and the Navy’s experimental guided missiles ship Norton Sound.

The Navy Secretary (Mr Francis Matthews) said that air-launched and ship-launched guided missiles had been developed under the Navy's antisubmarines programme. Much of the Navy’s guided missile work had been aimed at anti-submarine warfare, he said.
