U.N. AND KOREA

Sir.—Many correspondents, some well-meaning, some otherwise, ae seeking for every conceivable excuse * to justify North Korea’s aggression. As you clearly demonstrate, the Unit'd Nations cannot condone major acts of aggression and remain an effective organisation. No nation, especially small ones like ourselves, could rely upon an organisation which, before considering effective action, questioned the internal economy of the victim in every conceivable way For instance, assuming we were attacked by a powerful Asiatic country, what would be our feelings if, before taking action, our degree of civilisation was fully investigated? There is also the pertinent question whether we were fully exploiting our natural* resources while the invader was desperately in want. Further, what an encouragement if an invader is not to be expelled owing to his victima’ suffering! Public opinion counts for nothing behind the Iron Curtain, hence the spurious peace pledge of words only —Yours, etc , V. WILKINSON. Mitcham. November 2, 1950
