WOMEN ARTISTS
Of the 119 artists represented in the Living Canterbury Artists’ Loan exhibition now being held at the Durham Street Art Gallery, 68 are women. Among them are several whose work has gained recognition in exhibitions in Britain and Europe. Mrs Eleanor Hughes (formerly Miss Waymouth) first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1911, and like Mrs Esther Hope, she is a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. Mrs Hope’s works have been exhibited at the Royal Academy, at the Royal Scottish Academy and in Paris, and those of Mrs Elizabeth Wallwork have been hung in the Paris Salon and in galleries in Manchester and Taverpool. Another exhibitor, Mrs Elsie White, is a member of the Society of Miniaturists. In the exhibition is Dorothy Fisher’s picture which was shown a few months ago at the Exhibition of the Society of Women Artists, London. The picture, a portrait, has just arrived back in Christchurch from England. It is interesting to note the family groups that have lent pictures for this exhibition. On the walls are paintings done by Rosa Spencer Bower, by her daughter. Olivia Spencer Bower, and by her two nieces, Catherine Dixon and Janet Poulton. Three members of the Baverstock family—father and two sons—and three members of the Lovell-Smith family—husband, wife and son—have contributed to the exhibition, and two sisters—Ruby Rankin and Beatrice Partridge—are also exhibitors. The New Zealand Red Cross Society has voted £lOO for providing sufferers in the recent Assam earthquake with blankets and milk products. The Indian Red Cross Society had said that this type of assistance would be acceptable.
