FIRST LORD’S EASY WIN

FINE PERFORMANCE AT EPSOM

First Lord, which was backed down to £1 18s 6d on the win totalisator and £1 2s on the place totalisator, justified his confident support when he romped home in the September Handicap, the main race at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. A son of Dillon Hall and First Water, First Lord has now earned £4445 for five wins, three seconds, and a third in his nine starts for Mr M. Andrews (New Brighton), who bought him in March, First Lord was confidently handled by the Prebbleton trainer, A. J. Motz, who paraded him in sparkling condition. First Lord took the lead before half a mile had been covered, and Motz allowed him to set a solid pace. With six furlongs to go. First Lord wds followed by Parawa Derby. Chedworth Hall, and Caledonian Gold. When Motz let First Lord stretch out approaching the entrance to the straight, he soon settled the issue, carrying on to win by four lengths from Parawa Derby, which finished a neck in front of Fortuna. The last-named was not favoured by the luck in the running. She should be hard to beat in the main race on the second day of the meeting.

Chedworth Hall gave an encouraging performance to finish fourth, and then came Caledonian Gold.

Trained at Springston Lady Joss, from M. Dickie’s Springston team, confirmed the good impression formed of her at the National meeting at Addington, when she finished second to Te Maru in the fast time of 3min 31 2-ssec In the Metropolitan Stakes. At Epsom on Saturday she won the Franklin Stakes easily from the favourite, Yankiwi, which won tjhe Grey Lynn Handicap earlier in the afternoon. Margaret’s Own broke at the start. Lady Joss was the first to show out from Lady Belwin, Convoy, and Mundanity. I. W. Dickie had Lady Joss under a good hold in the early stages. With six furlongs to go she was followed by Lady Belwin, Convoy, Our Smith, Maleeta, and Mundanity. At this stage Yankiwi was at least *lO lengths from the leader.

J. B. Pringle sent Yankiwi after Lady Joss, which was pacing easily with four furlongs to go, but he could not bridge the gap,' and he was three lengths away at the finish. Our Smith finished third, and then came Mundanity. Bred at Christchurch by Mr A. C. Young, who races her in partnership with Mr S. Fearon, Lady Joss is by Springfield Globe from Sunburst, /by Travis Axworthy from Morning ,{Glow, by Our Thorpe from Dusky Morn, by Young Irvington from a mare by Rothschild. On Saturday’s display Lady Joss should be able to take a tight mark this season. Won Three Races

Heather Dillon,, the winner of three races in Southland last season, will have her first race since/being trained at Oainaru by J. M. Bain kt the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday.
