CROSS-COUNTRY RUNNING
CANTERBURY UNIVERSITY COLLEGE EVENTS
The annual Canterbury University College steeplechase was run in ideal conditions from the Old Stone House, Cashmere, on Saturday. The steeplechase is open to all students of the University, and a feature of this year’s race was the large number of starters in the women’s race. Nearly 100 women covered a course of a mile and three-quarters. Miss T. Minen*»n w °n the handicap section, and Miss J. Fox repeated last year’s performance by recording fastest time. The interhostels teams’ event was won by Bishop Julius Hostel for the third year in succession. \ . H. R. Alford had a well-deserved wiii m the men’s section, run over a strenuous five-mile coAirse, which included two water jumps and three hills. Alford, in his first year of cross-country running, ran a well-judged race, making the most °f nis handicap, to finish 20 yards ahead of D. Tucker, running from 6min behind scratch. P. E. Ellen, a back-rrtarker off Bmin, returned 27min 47sec for fastest time, with M. R. Craighead and Tucker second equal with 28min 13sec. Trophies were awarded as follows: L. A. Dougall challenge cup, H. R. Alford; Collins challenge cup (fastest time in women s section), Miss J. Fox; wooden trophies. Miss T. Minehan and D. Tucker. Results:— Men’s Handicap.—H. R. Anglican Club.—Senior members of the Anglican Harrier Club followed a course of nine miles through the BeckenhamSpreydon district on Saturday afternoon.
