PAYMENT OF LEVY ON HIDES

WARNING ISSUED BY COMMITTEE (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 15. The Hides Committee intended to take all possible steps to prevent any person avoiding payment of the levy on hides from animals slaughtered before August 31, the - secretary of the committee (Mr H. G. Andrews) said to-day. These steps, including the inspection of hide sales and the prosecution of offenders, would be taken to protect those vendors who were complying with the regulations, he said. Mr Andrews said that anyone found endeavouring to avoid payment of the levy by misrepresenting such hides as being from animals slaughtered after August 30 committed an offence against the Hides Regulations for which they were liable on summary conviction to imprisonment for Qhe year, or a fine of £lOO, or both. .The committee’s decision had arisen from reports received by the com'sorno owners of hides which had been produced before August 31 intended to withhold them from sale until after September 30 to avoid Paying the levy. The committee looked to vendors of hides, including butchers and dealers, for the fullest co-operation in carrying out the committees direction.
