AMALGAMATION SCHEMES
CHRISTCHURCH POLL ON NOVEMBER 18 EXPEDITION PROMISED FOR LEGISLATION (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON. September 7. “I have given an undertaking that a poll will be taken on November 18, and I am disappointed that, because of pressure in the Law Drafting Office, the bill has not come forward tor consideration by the Cabinet. I have asked that it should be given priority, and will use every effort to have it introduced as soon as possible,” said the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr W. A. Bodkin) this evening, when a report in “The Press” about the proSosed poll on the Local Government ommission’s amalgamation proposals for Christchurch was referred to him. The report suggested that the poll might not be held on November 18, at the same time as the municipal elections, because legislation providing for the poll had not yet been introduced in the House of Representa“I think it is most important that the poll should betaken on the same day as the municipal elections, so that whatever the decision of the electors may be. it will be representative of the majority public opinion in the Christchurch metropolitan area, ’ added Mr Bodkin.
