MAORI FESTIVAL
WEEK-END FUNCTIONS IN CHRISTCHURCH Next week-end the Addington Show Grounds will become a Maori marae or courtyard meeting-place, when a Centennial Maori festival is held there. A varied programme has been arranged for the three days of the festival, beginning with a M' ori concert to-morrow night. - On Saturday, at South Hagley Park, 13 Maori basketball teams will comgete in tournaments for the Pitama up (seniors) and the Hutika Crofts trophy (under 16). At 1.30 p.m., Maori Rugby teams, representing Marlborough, Otago, Canterbury, and South Canterbury, will play two preliminary matches, and a final match will be played at 3 p.m. In the evening, a ball will be held in the hall at the Show Grounds. On Sunday morning, religious services will be held, and the main part
of the festival will begin at 2 p.m. with the roasting of a bullock. Action songs poi dances, and speches in Maori will be made to the visitors from a large stage to be erected in front of the main grandstand. About 600 visitors are expected at the festival.
