SOUTH AFRICAN ELECTION
NEW SEATS VITAL TO MALAN GOVERNMENT
(Rec. 11 p.m.) PRETORIA, Aug. 30. . Voting is taking place in SouthWest Africa to-day for six members for the South African Parliament, with choice between Dr. D. F. Malan’s Nationalist Party and General Smuts’ United Party. If all six seats go to General Smuts he would be able to force a General Election. A victory for Dr. Malan. however, would make him independent of Dr. N. C. Havenga’s Afrikaaner Party, which holds the balance of power in the. Union Parliament. This is the first time South-West Africa has sent members to the Union parliament. Four thousand Germans living ih the territory represent 15 per cent, of the electorate, and their vote will be decisive in five of the six constituencies. In the back country the Germans who are mostly farmers, are expected to vote solidly for Dr. Malan’s Nationalists.
