A CLASH
Sir,—l wish to protest against the arrangements made for the Christchurch music-loving public to hear those all too few visiting artists who appear in person. Next Tuesday, there will be a most unfortunate clash that could surely have been avoided. Alfredo Campoli will appear at the Civic Theatre and the Musica Viva String Players at the Radiant Theatre. Surely I am right in supposing that both concerts make an appeal to the same people, who will have to be deprived of the thrill of one of them. One of the artists will also suffer from such an unfortunate arrangement, which reflects a certain disunity or incompetence among those responsible. —Yours, etc., , STRING PLAYER. August 23, 1950. “When the Musica Viva tour was being arranged inquiries revealed no definite bookings clashing with last Tuesday’s concert,” said the secretary of the Christchurch Chamber Music Society (Mr L. E. Hunter) when this letter was referred to him. “I tentatively booked two series of dates last September for July and August and in December the Christchurch City Council wrote to me pointing out that, this being centennial year, bookings were heavy, and asked which series I wanted. I asked to keep the August dates. I consider that the Christchurch Chamber Music Society should have made some endeavour to get in touch with me,” said the manager for Mr Alfredo Campoli’s concert tour (Mr A. D. M. Longden) when this letter was referred to him.
