SOUTHLAND BEATS WELLINGTON

VISITORS OUTCLASSED IN SECOND SPELL (New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, August 30. After holding Southland in the first half the Wellington Rugby team was outclassed in a match to-day at Rugby Park. Southland won, 19-3. The game was played on a dry ground, with a stiff easterly breeze. Playing with the wind, Southland could score oruy three points in the first half, from a penalty goal, although it had a territorial advantage. Wellington sparkled in the first few minutes of the second spell, when Jarden scored in the corner, but from then Southland was superior in all phases except hooking. . Led by McCaw, Molesworth, and Ferguson. the Southland forwards made numerous ooenings for the backs, of whom Smeaton (centre), Wilson (firstfiveeighths), and Harper (wing) were the stars. The Wellington back defence was sound, but it was disorganised by injury. Bevan and Jarden played well for Wellington. In the Wellington forwards Lloyd, Crist, and Avery were often promI inent Mexted showed glimpses of form,
