ARMED FORCES IN BRITAIN

HIGHER PAY DEEMED LIKELY

PRIME MINISTER TO BROADCAST ‘

(Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON. Aug. 29. The Parliamentary corresuondent of “The Times’’ says that it is generally believed that in his broadcast to-mor-row night on the Government’s plans for strengthening the armed forces, the Prime Minister (Mr Attlee) will announce both a general increase in service pay and allowances and a lengthening of the period of compulsory military service from 18 months to two years. In the defence debate in the House of Commons on July 26 Mr Attlee said that the general principle in view was to try to make the conditions of service life comparable with those in civilian life.

The extension of the period of military service would require amending legislation and this could be dealt with by Parliament when it reassembles on September 9.

Mr Churchill has already assured Mr Attlee of Opposition support for all measures necessary for national defence “even if they involved increasing the length of compulsory service.’’
