RAILWAY WAGGONS RUN LOOSE
CRASH INTO ENGINE AT HAWERA
(New Zealand Press Association) WANGANUI, August 29. A spectacular derailment on the main line at Hawera occurred just before 9 o’clock to-night, when seven box waggons, loaded with cheese, and one empty truck crashed into a stationary locomotive. The waggons had travelled from Eltham, 12 miles away. It was not known late to-night when the line would be cleared.
The waggons began their journey during shunting operations at Eltham.
They gained momentum on a down grade, and raced unchecked towards Hawera.
Most of the track between Eltham and Hawera is on a down grade.
