BIG WOOL PRICES
First Sydney Sale (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 28. Prices rose sensationally at the new season’s wool sales which opened at Sydney to-day. A substantial rise had been expected, but even the most optimistic growers were astounded to see all lines rise to unheard-of levels. Bids of 160 d and 170 d per lb were common from the outset and the strongest competition was maintained throughout. The official report said: "The market' ruled for the best descriptions of fleeces skirtings 50 per cent, above the closing June rates, while medium fleeces and faulty pieces rose 40 per cent. “Competition was very strong and well sustained from the Continent and Bradford, with some Russian support.” "A total of 11,814 bales were offered and 11,777 sold, as well as 167 from previous catalogues, and 3942 skin wools. The total clearance was 15,886 bales. “Crossbred and comeback fully participated im the price rises. "The top price was 173 d for 10 bales of greasy Merino. “Many clips were disappointing in colour, because of the abnormal rains.”
