ACTIVITIES OF MINISTRY OF WORKS'
Sir, —About four years ago Mr Semple and his staff put over a 10year plan. This must have cost a good deal, and the result is just “hooey.” To-day meetings on irrigation are being held, with no show of anything worth while being done for many years. The Mayfield-Hinds irrigation scheme, 40 per cent, completed several years ago. is left in mid-air. With acres of land fenced off and miles of channels put in 10 years ago, many farmers can get no satisfaction as to what will be done or when, and have had no payment for land taken by the scheme. With the Timaru aerodrome and the mess at Seadown, surely a little common sense can be discovered somewhere. “Ashley Dene” proves that with better cultivation, good seeds, and liberal top-dressing the production of Canterbury could be doubled in five years without crying for the moon.— Yours, etc., R. D. ROBINSON. Ashburton, August 22, 1950. [The Minister of Works (Mr W. S. Goosman) had no comment to make on this letter.]
