'Sumner Esplanade Lighting.— The replacement oi lighting standards on the Sumner Esplanade, to cost £1620, was authorised by the City Council last evenings The work will be carried but wnen the necessary standards and other materials can be procured. The total annual charges for the installation were estimated at £298 12s.

Art Advisory Committee.— The membership of the art advisory committee of the City Council will be increased from three to five with provision for two to retire by rotation each year. The Canterbury Society of Arts will be asked to call for nominations at its annual meeting, sitting members to be eligible for renomination, and to select its nominees by ballot.

Street Competitions.— Street competitions will .be held again this year in Christchurch. The suggestion has been made that the efforts of the winning streets be recognised by the erection of a small plaque in the street. The council’s finance committee has agreed to make £lOO available for the competition this year. Tramway Board Loan.— The council decided to invest £4OOO, available in the insurance fund, in the Christchurch Tramway Board’s £20,000 loan. Hagley Park Pavilion.— The Hagley Park Ground Committee • has been granted permission to move the pavilion in the south-west corner, known as the old boys’ navilion, back behind the present fence line. “The boundary in this corner has always been a little short, and the alteration would be a big improvement,” the reserves committee reported to the council. Cliff Face at Clifton.— All the dangerous material has now been removed from the cliff face at Clifton. “Although the cliff now appears quite safe, arrangements are being made to check it over every year, as it appears possible further movement of the rock may take place.” reported the works committee to the council. Removal of Footbridge.— The removal of the footbridge across the Avon river in Park terrace has been authorised by the works committee. Clifton Section Sold.—A building site of more than one acre in Panorama road. Clifton, will be sold by the City Council for £275 to Mr W. Mountfort. The tender by Mr Mountfort was the highest of four, the lowest being of £5O.
