TO-DAY’S MEETING AT ADDINGTON

TROTTING

Kublai Khan May Win First Race

SINGLE TASK IN FORM FOR WINTER HANDICAP

Because many fresh horses are included in the fields and the track promises to be fast, form shown on the heavy track on the first day of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s National meeting last Saturday may not prove a reliable guide for investors on the concluding day of the meeting to-day.

Real „ Scott, the impressive winner of the Louisson Handicap last Saturday, did not accept for the National Handicap, the main event to-day. In his absence, Chamfer, County Antrim, Indigo, and Trustee may divide the prize-money. One of M. Holmes’s Russley team, Chamfer will probably be sent out favourite on the win totalisator.

Blue Mist, one of the early favourites for the first race, the Improvers’ Handicap, has been scratched. Kublai Khan, a winner at Ashburton at his last start, will probably carry most support in the Improvers’ Handicap Worthy Ace, which has done well for H. Stafford, who trains him at New Brighton, and Fanciful, a place-getter last Saturday, should be next in demand.

be run on the Queen Mary Handicap and the Wildwood Handicap.

The feature races on the programme are t£e Addington Trotting Stakes for four and flve-year-old trotters, and the Metropolitan >’ stakes for four-year-old pacers.

Highland Kilt, a good performer last season for Mr R. A. McKenzie, gave a fine display when he was paraded at the Canterbury owners’ and breeders’ trials at Addington earlier in the month. He will probably be backed down to a short price in this race. Fourth Brigade, an attractive Light Brigade horse, Precaution, which has shown much ability for A. Holmes, who races him in partnership with Mr J. Shelley, and Fair Isle, a consistent performer for Messrs V. A.’born and E. J. August, may prove the hardest for Highland Kilt to beat. Morano, which has worked particularly well at'Addington this week, has come into favour for the Metropolitan Stakes, which has attracted a small but select field including Te Maru, Petro Star, Casacando, Monty Jason, and Officious, which all showed outstanding ability in their races last season. Mandrake’s solid effort to finish second to First Lord in the Heathcote Handicap last Saturday attracts attention to his prospects in the Queen Mary Handicap. the first leg of the double. Mobile Globe, the winner of three races last season for Messrs C. Smith and J. Findlay, and Red Emperor, which has raced well for Sir John McKenzie, should be with Mandrake at the finish. M. Holmes’s bracket. Vedette and Islaburn Lass, will be at a short price in the Wildwood Handicap, the second leg of the double. Fabric Silk and Systematic, which were both placed last Saturday, may be next in demand with investors. On the form shown last week, Ripcord, Single Task, and Barrier Reef, which finished in that order in the Christchurch Handicap, and Bashaw, which won the Cpemng Handicap, should all race well in the Winter Handicap. Fantom and Conceit, which did not race last week, should also be prominent. Bigger fields are carded for the second day than on the first day, and the racing should be full of interest. Selections are:— Improvers’ Handicap: Kublai Khan, Worthy Ace, Fanciful. Addington Trotting Stakes: ' Highland Kilt. Fourth Brigade, Precaution. Queen Mary Handicap: Mandrake, Mobile Globe. Red Emperor. National Handicap: Chamfer, County Antrim, Trustee. Wildwood Handicap: Vedette-Islaburn Lass bracket. Fabric Silk-Prince Hall bracket, Systematic.
