APPLES AND PEARS

Sir, —I read with interest three statements on apples and .pears in your issue of August 23. I took heart from the Minister’s warning to fruitgrowers. I smiled wryly at the mass of illogical statements of the Apple and Pear Board’s chairman. I gained considerable enlightenment from the remarks of Mr Congdon, president of the Fruitgrowers’ Federation. He criticised the Apple and Pear Board, telling it that it had made a mess of it, but he still wants thq fat return for his growers. After his verbal castigation, he concludes by asking the board to take his criticism kindly. Mr Congdon says in effect. “You have given the public poor quality fruit, but you have squezeed from them a good round sum of money, so for Heaven’s sake do not turn in the job. Make the bath water warmer, but please do not pull out the plug.”— Yours, etc., HAD’EM AND HEAVE. August 23, 1950.
