THE RANFURLY SHIELD
FOUR CHALLENGES ACCEPTED
NO WEDNESDAY MATCHES Four challenges for the Ranfurly Shield were accepted by the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening, and the dates for them were allocated. • The four challenges accepted were from Wairarapa, to be played on September 2; South Canterbury, September 9; West Coast, September 16, and Buller, September 30. The challenges not accepted were from Taranaki, Wanganui, and North Auckland. On September 23 Canterbury will play Wellington at Wellington. This will not be a shield match.
The chairman of the competitions pommittee (Mr R. W. Blazey) said the committee had recommended no matches on Wednesdays because it considered the season had already been heavy enough. When these challenges had been played the team would have played 12 matches for the season, and the committee considered that number was plenty. Mr H. C. Blazey said it was not fair to the players to expect them to play Wednesday matches, too. The team had been in training since May.
