SERVICE WITH K FORCE
FOUR APPEALS MADE IN CHRISTCHURCH
On the ground of public interest, four appeals against members of their staffs being accepted foi immediate service in Korea have been made by Christchurch firms. This was announced by the district superintendent of the Department or Labour and Employment (Mr S. E. McGregor), yesterday. In all cases, the appeals are from firms which serve the public. The employers claim that they cannot afford to let the men enter the Army at present without adversely affecting the public interest, and they ask for a delay in the culling up of the men.
The appeals would be heard by the Military Postponement Committee, which was established to hear appeals from 18-year-old recruits, said Mr McGregor. No date had yet been set for the hearings, but they would possibly be held next week.
The North Canterbury volunteers’ medical examinations should be finished by the end of next week, added Mr McGregor.
The examinations are being done at the rate of 120 a day. There are four examinations to each boarding—visual dental. X-ray, and physical. Country volunteers will be boarded on August 15 and 17. The Timaru an- 4 Ashburton sub-areas are carrying out their own medical boardings.
