RAILWAY SUPERANNUITANTS
Sir,—When I joined the Railways Department I was compelled to join the superannuation fund. After 39 years’ service I receive 12 monthly payments of £2l 0s 3d—total £252 3s a year, whereas, under social security, a married couple get £273—£21 a year more than I draw; apd I still have to pay the Is 6d in the pound wage tax. Further. I did not have the opportunity the railwaymen have today. For instance, if he is within six months of getting his 40 years’ service he may resign from the superannuation fund and gets all his contributions refunded, say £4OO. He can then come under social security and get the £2l a year more than I do and still have his £4OO to play with. The present Government promised to go into this matter and I am waiting to see if Mr Holland will keep his election pledge.—Yours, etc., RETROSPECTIVE. July 19, 1950. [The Minister of Railways (Mr W. S. Goosman) had no comment to make on this letter.]
