AMERICAN VIEW OF MR MAO

“Under Moscow’s Thumb” THREAT SEEN TO INDOCHINA (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10.45 p.m.) SINGAPORE, Aug. 9. “Mao Tse-tung is under Moscow’s thumb. For all practical purposes that is the view of the American State Department,” said Mr John Melby, chairman of the United States military and economic mission now visiting Singapore. Mr Melby said: “Indo-China is the keystone of the South-east Asian arch. Failure to halt Communism in IndoChina would have grave consequences throughout South-east Asia. We must hold Indo-China.”

Mr Melby said that the mission, which arrived at Singapore recently from Saigon, believed the French were doing a good job in Indo-China and obtaining Vietnamese co-opera-tion in the common cause.

Indo-China, he added, was faced not only with a threat to its internal security but also a threat of invasion from tlte north, though the mission had no evidence of Chinese Communist troop concentrations immediately threatening the frontier.
