U.S. PROGRESSIVE PARTY
MR HENRY WALLACE RESIGNS
(Rec. 9 p.m.) NEW YORK, August 8. Mr Henry Wallace to-day resigned from the Progressive Party, which was formed to run him for President in 1948. Mr Wallace’s action was a sequel to his split with the other party leaders over the Korean war. Mr Wallace recently issued a statement saying that he must stand with his country and the United Nations on the Korean issue.
The national committee of the Progressive Party, however, issued a statement opposing American intervention in the Korean war. State organisations of the party since then have voted almost overwhelmingly to support the national committee. Mr Wallace, in a letter to the party secretary to-day, said that in view of the action of the national committee and the State committees, he was convinced that he could “more effectively serve the cause of peace” by resigning.
Air Crash in Colombia.—A Colombian Air Force fighter aeroplane with a crew of three crashed into two homes to-day killing at least 14 persons. Eleven bodies were recovered from the ruins of houses and it is feared that the aeroplane’s crew also perished.—Bogota, August 8.
