GALE AT HEARD ISLAND

ATTEMPT TO BRING OFF PATIENT CRUISER STANDING BY IN HEAVY SEAS (Rec. 8 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 8. The cruiser H.M.A.S. Australia is standing by off Altas Cove, Heard Island, in heavy seas, awaiting an opportunity to send a boat ashore. The condition of Dr. Serge Udovikoff, a member of the Australian Antarctic expedition, who is suffering from appendicitis, is stated to be unchanged. A south-westerly gale has whipped up big seas and light ice has formed on some parts of the cruiser. When the weather moderates it is hoped to transfer two doctors to the island and to bring Dr. Udovikoff aboard the cruiser for the operation.
