COMMUNISTS IN CHINA
BRITAIN SAID TO BE 66 RUNNING SUPPLIES”
CHINESE NATIONALIST ALLEGATIONS
(Rec. 11.30 p.m.) NEW YORK. July 7. The Chinese Nationalist Prime Minister (General Chen Cheng), in an interview in Taipe. Formosa, featured in the “New York Times” to-day criticised Britain for “busily running supplies for Communist China.” General Chen said that the British activities were protected by the American request that the Chinese Nationalists should cease bombing the coast of the Chinese mainland.
“The British have adopted a shortsighted policy,” said General Chen. “The supplies they are delivering to Communist China will eventually go not only into North Korean hands, but may also be used later against Hong Kong, Malaya. and other British Asiatic holdings. The Chinese Government intends to raise this question with the American Government.” General Chen also criticised what he called the “contradictory policy” of the United States in Asia. He said the United States 7th Fleet now patrolled the Strait of Formosa to protect Formosa itself, but the United States continued to refuse American export licences for critical materials needed to ensure an effective defence. China was not asking for those materials: she had the money, and wanted tn pav for them. General Chen added If there had not been such contradictions and inconsistencies in [he policies of th? democrtaic nations, the- Russians could not have advanced as they had.
