CREATION OF U.N. ARMY

STEP ADVOCATED BY “ NEW YORK TIMES ” (Rec. 12.45 a.m.) NEW YORK. July 7. The “New York Times.” in a leading article, urges that the Security Council, at its meeting to-day, should create “a real United Nations army, which either literally or figuratively will fight under the United Nations’ banner.”

The newspaper says that the Security Council should call upon all the 43 members of the United Nations who have so far supported its action on Korea to provide assistance, as authorised in the Charter. “A United Nations’ army is essential, not only to back up the land, sea, and air forces already engaged, but also to impress upon all the world, and especially upon the Asiatic peoples, the fact that the forces mobilised under the United Nations’ mandate are not waging an ordinary war in which honourable men may stay neutral, nor, as Soviet propaganda charges, an imperialistic war of conquest; but are embarked instead upon a crusade in defence of the freedom and independence of all nations, and especially of the weaker nations only recently freed from a foreign yoke,” the “New York Times” adds.
