MARATHON DOUBLES MATCH SEDGMAN AND MCGREGOR BEATEN (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, July 6. The young Australian pair, Frank Sedgman and Ken McGregor, put up a terrific struggle in the quarter-finals of the men’s doubles at Wimbledon today. before losing to Budge Patty and Tony Trabert (America). The match lasted lor four hours and a quarter, although it went only to four sets. During this marathon rubber 94 games were played. The gruelling second set. which the Americans won 31-29. was the longest ever played at Wimbledon. The Americans held eight set points in this set before winning it, and the Australians held seven. The match was the finest doubles seen this year, both sides making amazing recoveries to the accompaniment of gasps and cheers from the excited crowd. Nineteen-year-old Trabert was the outstanding player. Miss Louise Brough (America), the holder of the women’s title, won her way through to the final to-day by beating her team mate. Miss Doris Hart, in straight sets. Miss Brough played a brilliant all-court game, and Miss Hart was unable to stem the tide. In the econd semi-final. Mrs Du Pont, the American champion, . beat her fourth-ranking fellow countrywoman. Mrs Todd, in three closelyfought sets. This match, however, provided nothing like the sparkle of the other semi-finals. Results:— Women’s Singles Semi-finals—Miss Brough beat Miss Hart. 6-4. 6-3: Mrs Du Pont beat Mrs Todd. 8-6, 4-6, 8-6. Men’s Doubles Quarter-anals—Pattv and Trabert beat Sedgman and McGregor. 6-4. 3129. 7-9. 6-2; Dro’ony and Sturgess beat Brighant and Washer (Belgium), 6-2, 6-2. 6-4. Women’s Doubles Quarter-finals —Miss Fry and Miss Hart beat Mrs Anderson (America) and Miss Curry (Britain), 6-1, 6-4: Mrs Buck and Miss Chaffee (America) beat Mrs Harrison and Miss Tuckey ‘Britain). 6-3. 6-3. Mixed Doubles Fourth Round—Worthington and Mrs Long (Australia) beat Mottram and Mrs Mottram (Britain). 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Quarter-finals Worthington and Mrs Long beat Quist and Miss Moran. 8-6. 6-1: Brown and Mrs Todd beat Bromwich and Mrs Harrison. 6-3. 6-4; Sturgess and Miss Brough beat Morea and Miss Schofield. 6-3. 13-11.
