PRIMITIVE FROG REDISCOVERED
Report From Stephens Island RIGID PROTECTION OF AREA (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. June 2. The frog Liopelma hamiltoni—- ' stated to be the world’s most primij five frog—has been rediscovered on Stephens Island, near D'Urville Island. ' by ‘Mr W H Dawbin. a lecturer in zoology at Victoria University ColIt is the ancestor of all other frog i types existing in lhe world. It is , found only in an area about 50 yards ' square on the summit of the island, i and has not been reported by naturalists for about 25 years. The frog has four fingers on each : of its arms, and five toes on its feet, I there being no trace of webbing, i Rigid protection has been im osed ; on the area where it was rediscox ered. 1 and zoologists expect to add large.y to knowledge of the species by firsthand st j r ’y.
