OLD HOMESTEAD DESTROYED
EARLY MORNING FIRE AT BLENHEIM
(New Zealand Press Association) BLENHEIM, June 2.
The Blairich homestead, a large twostoreyed wooden building erected about 1860, was destroyed by fire early yesterday morning. With it went a nearby mud dwelling with wooden fittings which was the original residence when the property was taken up just 100 years ago. The four men who occupied the homestead lost all their personal belongings and escaped only in night attire. One of them, who was sleeping in an upstairs room, had to jump to safety through a closed window. About two years ago, Blairich was taken over by the Crown for rehabilitation purposes and the men who occupied the building were engaged in developing work. Two musterers who went into the back country on Monday and were expected to return to-day. are also heavy losers, one of them having left £5O in his bedroll.
