THE MAYORALTY
Sir,—To me the requirements in the Mayor for our centennial year are clear-cut. We are beginning our second century: first and foremost our chief citizen must have personal knowledge of many cities in the old world and the new, their problems and how they are solving them. He must be imaginative and bold, able to visualise the fulfilment of new ideas, not penny-wise and pound-foolish, able to lead. Thanks to past good management we are not burdened financially. I would also prefer an ex-serviceman. One or two in the list in “The Press” to-day fulfil these conditions. Though we are not ungrateful, we must not regard the mayoralty as the reward for past services; our destiny is ahead. We need at our head the same vision and spirit of adventure outstanding in those who founded our city 100 years ago.—Yours, etc., SPE FORTIS. June 2, 1950.
