LABOUR LEADER’S REMARKS
CRITICISM BY OFFICIAL OF FARMERS’ BODY
Remarks made by Mr James Roberts, M.L.C., at the recent annual conference of the New Zealand Labour Party in Auckland were criticised by the secretary (Mr A. E. G. Lyttle) at the fifth annual provincial conference of North Canterbury Federated Farmers yesterday. Mr Roberts was reported to have said: “Let us get back to earth and heave bricks at the other fellow and this country will be ours.” “Our aim, whilst watching the interests of primary producers, is, to broaden and strengthen the foundation on which our whole economy rests.” said Mr Lyttle, “and wc cannot therefore fail to be concerned when we read such a statement. We cannot and will not believe that such sentiments meet with a chorus of approval. Such utterances can only do harm, when the aim of ail should be to work amicably together. We are certain that farmers will do their part and continue to farm tn the best of their abilitv. reiving on all the other units in the economic machine, from producer tn consumer, to do theirs.” he concluded.
