NEWS BROADCAST JAMMED

“ OUTSIDE STATION ”

BLAMED (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 2. A loud humming noise drowned a portion of a 8.8. C. news broadcast over the National Broadcasting Service network last night. The portion blotted out was the recording of a report to the United States Congress by Mr Dean Achescn which included comment on Russian armaments. At the conclusion of the broadcast, the announcer apologised for the interruption, and said it was caused by jamming by an “outside station.” The incident follows closely on a complaint made in Dunedin by the president of the New Zealand Radio DX League (Mr J. F. Fox) that powerful Russian transmitters were jamming shortwave broadcasts. The broadcasting authorities in Wellington said to-day that a momentary jamming might be accidental. On the other hand, it was well known that jamming had been going on for years.
