WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Sumner.— A gramophone recital. “The Snow Goose,” was presented by Mrs Toy, who presided at the May meeting of the Sumner Women's Institute. During the afternoon a report on the federation meeting was given by Mrs Mauger. Competitions for the month resulted as follows:—bloom: Mrs Thomas 1, Mrs Boyce 2, Mrs Toy 3. Cluster: Mrs Toy 1, Mrs Bassett 2, Mrs Boyce 3. Spike: Mrs Brocherie 1, Mrs Thomas 2, Mrs Vaughan 3. Tomato relish: Mrs Bassett 1, Miss Qurson 2. Competitions for April resulted as follows:—large bloom: Mrs Thomas 1, Mrs Bassett 2. Small bloom: Mrs Bassett 1, Miss Birks 2, Mrs Thomas 3, Miscellaneous: Mrs Bassett 1, Mrs Upham 2, Miss Burson 3.

Hornby.—Three new members were welcomed by the president (Mrs E. B. Thompson), who presided at the May meeting of the Hornby Women’s Institute. During the afternoon an interesting demonstration on ways of arranging butter for the table was Riven by Mrs Thompson. The agenda for the Dominion conference to be held in July was read. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Macaulay and Pomare.
