PAINTING NOT BANNED

MAYOR COMMENTS ON REPORTS SUGGESTION TO REPERTORY SOCIETY “The Press” Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH May 31. Tne Palmerston North City Council has objected to newspaper reports that it had banned the showing of a copy of Modigliani’s famous nude, “Red Lady,” which enters into the plot of Aldous Huxley’s “The Gioconda Smile.” when the play was presented by the Manawatu Repertory Society. During the P la y the painting was screened with gauze and kept facing away from the audience, the reason given being that the City Council's Opera House committee had ruled that the painting was ilnfit to be exhibited on the stage. 41 _ At „ the last meet ing of the council, the Mayor (Mr G. Tremaine) said the council had no power of censorship except in respect of Sunday night concerts in the Opera House. When the matter of the picture was raised he and two councillors conferred, and. in accordance with their decision, the chairman of the Opera House committee suggested to the Repertory Society that it would be better not to use the picture, since it might offend the audience. This was a suggestion only. It was not a ban, as -was stated in the newspapers.
