IMMIGRANTS FOR AUSTRALIA
PLANS OF TASMANIAN GOVERNMENT N.S.W. ALSO TO RECRUIT LABOUR FORCE HOB ABT, May 31. The Tasmanian Government has decided to accelerate its immigration pre gramme l\y encouraging the entry of 10,600 British migrants over a l.vcyear period. Announcing this, the Premier (Mr R. Cosgrove) said that this labour force would overcome the present competition by employers for the labour availab e in the State. The Government would confer with primary and secondary industrialis.s regarding probable .labour requirements, so that the migrants could be absorbed into the community. A large number would be building tradesmen. Hostels would be constructed at Hobart. Launcest n and on the norlh-west coast to provide initial housing for migrant fam lies. In New South Wales, at its first meet'ng. the newly-appointed Transport and Highways Commission, which wi l control and correlate all forms of transport, within New South Wales, has decided to recruit 3500 British mito wo'rk on major projects. The Director of Transport Highways (Mr R Winson) said that an officer wou’d b n s r, nt overseas immedito recruut migrants, who would : n°iude technicians. artisans. and skilled and semi-skilled workers. The commission will also import 2000 prefabricated homes for married men. and refabripated materials for hostels to house 1500 single men. The New South Wa’es Minister of Health (Mr C. Kelly) announced thnf the State Governm , 'nt had ordered 'rom Britain nrefabricated comrmnents worth £2x88.000 for the erection of hospitals.
