INCREASED COAL PRICES

Sir,—As State coals are higher in price and have gone up more than coal from private mines, would the Under-Secretary of Mines publish the amounts of the subsidy on the various State mines? Mr Benney recently stated that coal was too high in price. No doubt he knows why. Apparently the public now have to pay for the huge waste of money paid in*the past on State mines, and will go on paying for the uneconomic unit of State mines. In view of Mr Benney’s statement regarding the high price of coal, one must expect the Mines Department to get bn the job and produce coal cheaper from the State mines.— Yours, etc., COAL MERCHANT. May 22, 1950. [When this letter was referred to the Under-Secretary for Mines (Mr C. H. Benney), he said that he had no comment to make on an anonymous letter.]
