ADDINGTON MARKET

HIGH QUALITY FAT SHEEP LAMB PRICES SLIGHTLY EASIER A yarding of exceptionally good quality iat sheep came forward for tiie Addington Market yesterday. The sale was very keen, and prices for Wethers were 2s a head better than last week. Fat lambs were forward in large numbers, but met a rather slacker sale. A smaller yarding of fat cattle met an excellent sale at prices about £1 a head up on last week all round. The demand for store sheep continued keen, and a small offering was bought readily at higher prices. STORE SHEEP The offering or store sheep consisted of .540 lambs, 123 two-tooth ewes, 397 aged »wes. and 492 wethers, a total of 2352 against 5831 last week. The demand for all classes was again keen, and prices were firmer. The lambs included a number of pens of uselui and well-grown wethers, the best of which made up to 49s 6d. The best ewes, a line of first-cross English Leicester Merino haiibreds, made 565, Good lambs made 36s to 4»s. and ordinary 29s to 355. Prices were fully Is a head above those of last week. Odd pens of useful fresh young ewes were inc.uded among the aged ewes. There was an excellent demand for all classes at about Is a head above last week. A pen of two-tooths made 60s 6d, and top price for aged ewes was 56s tor a pen of two, lour, and six-tooth Romneys in lamb to Southdowns. Soundmouthed ewes made to 50s. Good ewes made 36s to 435, and others down to 2is 60. . . The offering of wethers contained a good showing of hill sheep of excellent standard. The demand was sound, and the bulk of the yarding changed hands at 51s to 57s 6d, with odd pens down to 44., 6d.

FAT LAMBS Tne fat lamb yarding totalled 3185 head compared with 2852 last week, and tor • near the end of the season contained a surprisingly high percentage of high quality lambs. Willie the sale was again a satisfactory one the market was not quite so buoyant as at recent sales and values were inclined to be easier. There " a = apparently an oversupply of good butchers’ lambs for towards the end or the market the trade was not active. Nine lambs from Mr R- McAnulty (Rakaia) topped the sale at 72s Id. A small yarding of vealers came forward. Quality was better than for some time, and the demand was keen at prices 15s a. head above t ose of last week. Prime large runners nade to £l5 18s 6d, others £7 18s 6d to 4 10 8s 6d; best suckers £7 16s to £lO 3s —, medium £4 13s 6d to £6 8s 6d: large calves 51s to 68s, medium 40s to 525, and small and rough down to 20s. STORE CATTLE The store cattle yarding was back to about normal size after the seasonal increase, but apart from a good showing of heifer calves, there was little of quality. The heifer calves sold very well, and were 10s a head or more above recent rates. For some reason heifer calves have sold this season comparatively badly, but yesterday they met an excellent inquiry. Among the quotable lines were 31 Aberdeen Angus heifer calves at £5 18s 6d to £6 8s 6d, 19 Aberdeen Angus-Hereford cross at £6 13s 6d, 16 Hereford-Shorthorn cross at £6 18s 6d. 16 Hereford cross at £4 18s 6d, 13 Hereford cross steer calves at £6 18s 6d. 9 Shorthorn cross heifers due to calve in the spring at £7 13s 6d, and 16 empty Aberdeen Angus cows at £5 3s 6d to £5 6s 6d. Odd pens of 18months steers made to £9 13s 6d, and odd pens of two and a half-year-old cattle made to £l4. DAIRY CATTLE An entry of about 45 head of dairy • cattle included a few good serviceable

rows, which sold at slightly higher price* than last week. Other sorts showed little change on late rates. The heifer entry for the most part consisted of secondary sorts, and these sold at about last week’s rates, but at the .end of ’the sale the market was a little easier than at the beginning. Best second, third, and fourth calvers made from £l6 to £2l 10s, with two sales at £27 10s and £3l 10s, medium or good £lO to £l5, aged and inferior £6 to £9; best heifers £l6 to £l9, medium heifers £l2 10s to 15 10s, and small and backward £7 to £ll 10s. - FAT PIGS The entry of porkers was the smallest for some time, and competition, although , not buoyant, was keen throughout at , values 3s .to 5s ahead above last week. Baconers were forward in small numbers, and the sale was the best for a considerable time. Best quality pigs Were up to. 10s. dearer than at recent sales. Values were:— Light porkers, £4 2s 6d to £4 10s 6d. Medium porkers, £4 15s 6d to £5 4s 6d. Heavy porkers. £5 12s 6d to £6 9s 6d. Average price per lb, HJd to 14Jd. Choppers, £5 Is to £lO Is. Light baconers. £6 12s 6d to £7 2s 6d. Medium baconers, £7 4s 6d to £7 14s 6d ' Heavy baconers, £7 17s 6d to £8 4s 6d. Extra heavy baconers, £8 6s 6d to £8 14s 6d. Average price per lb, lid to 12d. STORE PIGS The entry in the store pig section was smaller than last week, but quality was not up to the standard of recent sales. The attendance of buyers was a little larger, but values showed little change except in the case of weaners, which were 2s to 3s a head easier. Values were:— Weaners. 15s to 255. Slips. 28s to 355. Small stores. 36s to 445. Medium stores. 47s to 555. Large stores, 58s to 70s. BURNSIDE (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, May 31. With fairly large yardings in the major sections, valued for fat cattle and sheep barely reached the figures of last week at the Burnside sale to-day. In the fat cattle section, the number penned was 375 and their quality was the best for some weeks. The sale varied a good deal throughout. Average beef is not in favour with the trade, and in many cases it was difficult to make sales, even at reduced rates. Better class beef commanded quite good attention and sold at prices equal to last week's. Quotations: extra prime bullocks, to £32 2s 6d; prime, £24 17s 6d to £2B 7s 6d; medium, £2l 17s 6d to £2O 2s 6d: light, from £l7 12s 6d. Extra prime heifers, to £2O 2s 6d; prime, £l5 17s 6d to £l7 17s 6d; medium, £l2 7s 6d to £l4 2s 6d; light, from £ll 12s 6d. Price cows, £l4 7s 6d to £l7 12s 6d; medium, £ll 12s 6d to £l2 12s 6d; light, from £8 7s 6d.

There was a yarding of 2750 of extra quality fat sheep. Prices for wethers were a shade below those at recent sales and ewes showed little quotable alteration. Extra prime ewes, to 50s; prime, 44s to 48s; medium, 36s to 40s; light, from 325. Extra prime wethers, to 725; prime, 66s to 695; medium, 58s to 635; light,-from 48s. The yarding of nearly 900 fat lambs was a mixed one. but prices were in favour of vendors, both the trade and export buyers bidding well up to their limits. One consignment of 25 extra quality, lambs, offered on account of Mr R. Burgess (Highcliff) made an average of 71s. Quotations: extra prime lambs, to 71s 7d; prime, 58s to 655; medium, 50s to 545; light, from 425.

With the exception of better class cattle, interest in the store cattle was lacking. Good, fresh-conditioned three to four-year-old steers made, up to £l9, average sorts of three to four-year-olds £l5 17s 6d to £l7 ss. one and a half to two-year-old steers £9 15s to £l3 10s, best quality runners £lO 10s to £l2, average sorts £7 16s to £B, best vealers £5 to £5 12s, light and medium from £3 14s.

There was again a good sale for all classes of baconers and porkers, with prices inclined to be even a shade better than last week. Best quality baconers made to £8 16s, prime £7 18s to £8 7s, medium £7 4s to £7 10s, light from £6 16s. Best porkers made £5 15s to £6 12s. small and medium from £4 18s.

With the exception of a few better sorts, the bulk of the yarding of dairy cattle was of backward calvers. The inquiry for close to profit cows was good, these making from £lB to £2O. and for better class heifers in the same condition £l5 to £l7. Late calvers made from £5 15s to £7 18s.
