NYALLO SCOTT SOLD

TROTTING

FUTURE RACING IN AUSTRALIA Nyallo Scott, which estalished the New Zealand record of 3min 23sec for one mile and five furlongs when he finished third to Dragpman and Baby Grand after starting from the 60 yards mark in the J. H. Williams Handicap at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s 1949 Easter meeting, has been sold to a West Australian buyer by Sir John McKenzie, who bred him at “Roydon Lodge,” Yaldhurst. Nyallo Scott was leased before he was registered by L. F. Berkett, who trained him at Nelson for his early races. Berkett soon realised that Nyallo Scbtt possessed extraordinary speed, but he proved a difficult horse to manage, and for a time it was doubtful if he would even get to the races. However, he gradually improved, and at his first start at the Marlborough Trotting Club’s meeting on March 16, 1946, he finished third to News Agent and Amberlight. With the possible exception of his trainer, few who watched him in that race realised that within the next two seasons he would become the most raced, most travelled, and most discussed pacer in commission. Nyallo Scott rapidly improved, and in the 1946-47 season he carried on from success to success, earning £7730 for 11 wins and 11 minor placings. In the following season, Nyallo Scott gained two wins and two minor placings. When Berkett’s lease expired, Nyallo Scott was sent by Sir John McKenzie to be trained at Te Awamutu by E. N. Kennerley. After being unplaced in three starts, Nyallo Scott was transferred to G. B. Noble’s team, and except for a short period when he was in G. S. Smith’s team at Addington, he has been trained by him for his races since then. Nyallo Scott, which was assessed on 2min 7sec, 2min 41sec, and 4min 21sec, when he was taken over by Noble, has been lightly raced over the last 18 months. Under Noble’s guidance, he showed his best form when he took his record last season. The 1939 son of U Scott and Nyallo, Nyallo Scott has earned £10,017 in stakes in New Zealand. He should add to this total if he can be persuaded to show his best form in Australia. BASHAW IN FORM LIKELY FAVOURITE AT ASHBURTON Bashaw, which was driven by D. J. Townley, who trains him at Tinwald for R. Townely, brought his record to a win, two seconds, and two thirds in his last five starts, when he finished a nose behind Dame Durdin after giving away 36 yards start in the Addington Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. On the strength of this display, Bashaw will probably be sent out favourite for the Stewards’ Handicap, of two miles, at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting this week. A good stayer. Bashaw beat Daredevil after giving away starts of up to 60 yards in the Stewards' Handicap at Hutt Park on May 6, and at Oamaru on May 13 he finished strongly in third place to Rear Light and Globe Son after starting from the 84 yards mark in the Ascot Vale Handicap. On that form, Bashaw should have most of the others struggling to keep up with him over the concluding stages of the Stewards’ Handicap. Most opposition to Bashaw may come from Dame Durdin. Concord, Globe Son, and Ingle Star. One of J. J. Flynn’s team at Waikouro, Ingle Star has gained three wins and three minor placings this season. At his last start, Ingle Star was seen at his best when he beat Windydale by a neck after giving away starts of up to 120 yards in the Ferndale Handicap at Gore on May 20. The trotters in Southland are not of a high standard, but Ingle Star’s performances have been full of merit. He should pay a dividend at Ashburton on Saturday. Consistent Tlie consistent trotter, Tantamount, topped off his list of 13 minor placings in his first 16 starts for the season with two wins at the Otaki Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. A • six-year-old Jcsedale Dictator gelding. Tantamount should soon win again for Messrs D. and P. Hansen. Narrowly Beaten Air Mail gave a sterling performance at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday to finish a head behind Tutta Bella in the Fendalton Handicap. She would not need to show much improvement on that effort to win the Durbar Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday. Finished Fast Driven by T. Webster, who is a wellknown jockey, Loyal Rita finished fast to beat Ivy’s Pride by a neck in the Waitohu Handicap at Otaki on Saturday. A four-year-old Josedale Grattan , mare, Loyal Rita is cut of Great Rita. May be Placed Esperanto showed his best, form since being trained by P. C. Clough when he finished within a length of Gretna Green in the Telegraph Handicap, of two miles, at the Reefton Trotting Club's meeting on May 20. If he races up to that form, Esperanto may be placed in the Improvers’ Handicap at Ashburton this week. Not at Her Best Hoity Toity, a winner when trained at Methven earlier in . the season, was not able to show her best form at the Otaki Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, as she was recovering from a cold. A Likely Type C. V. May paraded a likely type of two-year-old filly in Moreto at the trials at Ashburton on Tuesday. By a winner in Marco Polo, Moreto is out of Lady Rescue, which took a record of 3min 40 3-ssec for one mile and five furlongs. Lady Rescue is out of Rescue, by Wildwood Junior from Pakotui, by Prince Imperial from Mali Honey, by Rothschild. Won in Record Time Farlena. which won the 1949 New Zealand Sapling Stakes at Ashburton in the record time of 3min 19 l-ssec, gained her first win this season when she beat El Supremo in the Kc-whai Trot Handicap at the Amberley Racing Club’s meeting on May 13. If she accelerates quickly, Farlena may add to her record in the New Zealand Futurity Stakes at Ashburton on Saturday. Not Granted. The Forbury Park Bowling Club’s request to hold a matinee meeting at Forbury Park in qrder to raise funds was refused by the board of the New Zealand Trotting Association on Friday night.
