MAIL BAG MISSING

NEARLY £4OO IN CHEQUES LOST

A mail bag for the Crop Research Division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. Lincoln, which was delivered to the gates of the premises by a bus from Christchurch on Monday, is missing. The bag contained, among other mail, nearly £4OO in Treasury cheques for salaries. Payment of the cheques has been stopped. The bag was dropped outs’de the gates of the division at 8.30 a.m. but 10 minutes later it had disappeared. The cheques were post-dated June 1 from Wellington, and had the names of the employees on them.
