RELIEF FOR CRETE

PROPOSAL TO R.S.A. The possibility of using funds subscribed to provide food parcels for Britain to send food and clothing to Crete, was discussed by the executive of the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association. ‘ A member, Mr I. J. Wilson, wrote to the executive mentioning the appeal of the British Consul in Crete for food and clothing for some Cretans living in extreme poverty, and suggesting that the R.S.A. should take a lead in organising an appeal. The fooa-for-Britain project should be reviewed as the rationing in Britain had been eased, said Mr R. A. Nightingale. It might be possible to transfer some of the funds available to provide relief for Crete. To an objection by Mr S. A. Coleman that the money had been subscribed by the public for a specific purpose, Mr R. C. Day said he thought the public would have no objection to the fuhds being used for the Cretans who in the face of great danger had helped New Zealand soldiers. It was agreed that Mr Wilson should be asked for proposals for an appeaL
